The art of storytelling

For this course, I was assigned to pick a topic of focus that will be used for a separate blog. My topic of focus is persuasive digital storytelling. This topic is one I am passionate about as I assisted in creating a course related to digital storytelling at my undergraduate university and worked as a grant consultant to combine service learning with digital storytelling in a course. Digital storytelling is important to me academically as it is the topic of my thesis, and it is important to me professionally as I work in a public library and the idea of storytelling is always at the forefront.

The art of storytelling is a complex and essential tool of persuasion. In recent years, this normally oral art form has seen a transformation due to advancements in technology. Technological media growth has spurred the idea of stories being told digitally. From this growth, the field of digital storytelling has emerged.

Digital storytelling combines narrative with elements of digital media to tell numerous types of stories. The purpose of a digital story is to successfully bring the content of the story together with the way in which the story is conveyed. It focuses on the idea of using digital media to increase the effectiveness of a story.

The persuasive nature of digital stories is thought to be directly influenced by the multimodal choices the storyteller uses to convey the story. Modes include the digital construction used in the story such as text, visuals, and audio. The use of multimodalities has a great effect on how the audience perceives the content and message of the story, as the multimodal combination acts as an encoded message shared with an audience.

The purpose of my topic-oriented blog will be to gather additional sources and information related to the idea of persuasive digital storytelling. Posts on the digital storytelling blog may help me to determine whether the persuasiveness of a digital story relies on the effectiveness of multimodal choices, or if a digital story follows in the oral storytelling tradition of persuading an audience merely with content. More importantly, it can help me gain insight into what the mainstream populace thinks about digital storytelling through comments and engagement from readers.
